It’s Time To Pick Up “The Can” And Get In The Game

Kick-the-CanThe problem of illegal immigration has been kicked down the street so far it can no longer be avoided.  Political pundits rightly point out that the law breaking Latinos have become a political liability for Republican politicians.  Actually the numbers make it an issue for both parties.

For decades American politicians from both parties have failed to properly secure our borders, particularly our border with Mexico. Our elected representatives in Congress have kicked the can of responsible government down the street when it came to the issue of illegal immigration.  Now the number of people in this country illegally has become a major issue, it can no longer be ignored.

For the politicians it is not about people, it is all about numbers, after letting so many people violate the law for so long and failing to enforce regulations and law we are now overwhelmed with the problem.  Unfortunately it is a political pattern we are repeating.

We have become a country of lazy citizens abdicating our responsibility to elected leaders and putting our heads in the sand to ignore their activities.  We listen to their rhetoric and blindly follow, lacking the education or the will to understand and participate in our own government.

Our problem is not illegal immigration, our problem is poor political leadership weak of character and strength in the skills of real leadership.  Our leaders are afraid of the voters, with spines of wet noodles they pander and placate when faced with real responsibility.

They could not say, “no” to illegal immigration instead they turned away and failed to act responsibly.  Now a price will be paid as they pick up “the can” they have kicked down the street.  But the game goes on and this time the stakes are even higher.

We are kicking “the can” of fiscal responsibility so far down the street we a placing our nation at risk financially.  We are risking the future for instant gratification we expand government to answer our needs and willfully remove our own responsibility.

Our leaders bury us in a mountain of debt as we sit silently by ignoring the problem and trusting that what they do will be right.  We have allowed our country to be run without a budget, surpassed our limits for debt and we have kicked “the can” of financial responsibility down the street.

The day is coming when we must pick up “the can”, the game will be over.  We will have a choice to make, either we will hear the word “no” or we will have gone so far down the road of self-destruction as a nation, we will not recognize American as the land of the free, full of economic opportunity.

We as citizens allowed illegal immigration, and we have allowed financial irresponsibility. The only question that remains is how much longer we will vote to continue down the path to our own national destruction.  Our rights as citizens are being eroded, our financial future is at risk and our very foundations of government are being questioned.

It is time to pick up “the can”.  America, it is time to get in the game.  Citizen participation in a Republic is a responsibility; apathy is the road to destruction.

Reflections On A Political Convention

The drama and smoke of the political conventions has disappeared like the black and white televisions that brought their images to American families a generation ago.  It was another time then without cable or internet, a time with rabbit ears and snow but we tuned in and we watched.  We were not political but all three available networks were broadcasting live from the convention and there was no alternative.

Today the conventions are more scripted and interspersed with entertainment.  Today we have alternative viewing options and millions of Americans choose not to watch.  Millions of Americans form their views on politics from chosen sound bites fed to them by a media, often with an agenda of their own.

A generation ago, may have been a more innocent time, a time when our lives were not so divided by alternatives of activity.  Politics and parties may not have been a staple of dinner conversation in your home all the time but for two weeks every four years it was in the spotlight and the center of attention.

You watched and you learned.  You learned about the character of candidates and the makings of your government.  You learned about back room deals and bargains, you learned who were the power brokers behind the scenes and you; saw how the candidates earned their endorsement.  You didn’t wait for filtered sound bites you heard the whole story and saw it unfold before your eyes.

Today our conventions are more about political marketing.  Today conventions are more akin to an extended infomercial designed to sell a candidate.  Gone are the smoke filled rooms and ushered in are the smoke and mirrors of marketing mavens.  Stages are filled with the elaborate sets and the faces you expect to see in movies and on television.

As the conventions drone on you begin to wonder as you watch if they are a relic from another time or have they just changed function from candidate selection to candidate coronation.  You wonder how many undecided voters are actually tuned in.

Then like the morning sun on the horizon there appears some memorable moment when you wish all of America could see and hear what you are seeing and feeling.  Your faith in politics may be shaken but your faith in America and the American dream is just as strong today as it ever was.

For me that moment came last night while listening to the words of Marco Rubio.  He spoke about the American dream and how special it is to be an American.  He spoke about the promise of America and the importance of freedom and liberty.  He told the story of American immigrants, of their dreams, of their sacrifices and their love of family.

Unlike our Governor Dan Malloy telling me about how we must all share in the sacrifice to contribute more taxes for bigger government.  Marco Rubio spoke about his mother, father, and grandfather and how their sacrifice was for opportunity and freedom as an American.  Much of their sacrifice was to escape the role government in their lives not to enlarge it.

Mr. Rubio spoke from the heart and as I listened I reflected on my parents, and grandparents and thought how much alike the sacrifice had been.  I thought about the positive message of opportunity and freedom and the contrast of what I have been hearing about political attacks on wealth and success.

This Republican convention will have been time well spent if Americans are refocused on the ideals of America with freedom and opportunity.   The doors of opportunity are opened not by punishing or plundering the success of others but by protecting and promoting the opportunities for all Americans.

BANK HEIST MONEY REMAINS WITH CHILD

New Mexico has a problem, it seems a man robbed a bank and fled with almost $9,000 his escape however, was short lived as police stopped the car a short distance away and found the loot.  Now the bank wants the money back but legal defense hired by the man’s family says the money belongs to the six year old child that was riding in the back seat.

It seems the child was wearing a backpack which contained the money and some school books.  The defense team is now making the claim that the child was merely riding in the backseat and the fact that the man may have acted illegally does not provide cause to take away the child’s money.  The State and the bank in question are claiming the money came from an illegal act and hence no gain from that act should pass to the child.

Now here is where the discussion gets interesting.  The defense has sighted the fact that there is a legal basis for their defense in the constitution under the 14th amendment.  Here is their contention, if it is legal to gain citizenship for a child while the parent is an illegal alien simply by the act of birth and the child has done nothing more than be present during the crime of invasion and occupancy then the money in question is analogous and has the legal value and is equivalent to United States citizenship and can not be taken away.  The attorney then apologized for trivializing the value of United States citizenship but concluded that was not his doing it was the interpretation of the federal government that had already done that.

The next question that comes to mind is the “legal value” of United States citizenship?  Some would say it is a priceless treasure paid for with the blood and sacrifice of patriots and yet others are willing to give it away to illegal criminal invaders simple because their children are born here during an invasion and illegal occupancy.  What is your opinion?

The 14th amendment was introduced after the civil war to address the issues associated with the civil rights of newly freed slaves.  Senator Jacob Howard the original author of the amendment described the clause as excluding “persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers.” He was supported by other Senators including Judiciary Committee Chairman Lyman Trumbull. Mr. Trumbull was born in Connecticut and represented the State of Illinois.

The framers of the amendment were men of honor acting to insure the full legal rights of former slaves as citizens of the United States.  They clearly did not frame the amendment to bestow citizenship as a reward for illegal entry into the United States.  To gain a priceless treasure through an illegal act no matter how innocent the recipient would be an ill gotten gain and hence should not be the policy of this or any nation.

In the interest of full disclosure the above bank robbery never occurred and there is no such legal defense being proposed.  The story is purely fictional and only used to illustrate the issue and to stimulate some thoughts by you the readers.
