Why Today, Why This Time?

11:00 am November 11, 1918 marked the end of World War I, the world was at peace, hostilities ended and a bloody conflict became a memory.  The armies headed home and the warriors returned to civilian life.  It was that time and that date that the war to end all wars, it was over.

November 11 was set aside by President Wilson as a day of remembrance and reflection saying, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

Unfortunately, war has not ended; it continues to tear the fabric of family life with sacrifice and sorrow.  It is on this day we reflect and remember those that serve our nation with a sense of duty in war and peace.  No act of service shall go unnoticed; no sacrifice too small, all of those that serve in uniform shall be remembered on this day.

Today we remember and thank our veterans of the past and yet we shall not forget our active duty personal that on this day serve our nation, on and off the battlefield.  Our men and women serve and sometimes battle, not to gain territory but to protect our lives and preserve our freedom.

In 1954 Armistice Day was renamed to Veterans Day to better reflect the meaning of this day as a time of consideration for all the men and women that have served our nation in any and all branches of military service.  It is a date too important to be set aside as any Monday just to gain a three day weekend.  Veterans Day is November 11 a day of armistice earned with sacrifice, a time of peace in 1918 and a time of reflection in 2012.

On this day at 11:00am take the time to pause.  Take a moment to thank a veteran, reflect on the sacrifice they have given, say a prayer and remember them, for they have made your life and your world a better place.

If We Forget We Fail Our Children

Have we forgotten some of the lessons of World War II, have we lost some of our traditions?  Ask any school age child what holiday we celebrate today and you are more likely to get an answer like the opening of spring soccer or little league baseball than Armed Forces Day.  Have we forgotten?

The war was over, it was 1949 and President Harry S. Truman was in the White House when he spearheaded the idea of a single holiday when all Americans would gather together and honor those serving our nation with military service.  That announcement was August 31, 1950.  Memories of World War II were vivid; the sacrifice of lives and dreams was etched deeply in the hearts of Americans.  How could this ever be forgotten?

The Department of Defense described the day as an “educational program for civilians with the goal of increasing awareness about the armed forces.”  According to the department of defense, “It was a day for the military to show ‘state-of-the-art’ equipment to the civilian population they were protecting. And it was a day to honor and acknowledge the people of the Armed Forces of the United States.”.

Until the day was announced each branch of the service held their own day but this was more than unification for celebration because it coincided with the unification of all military branches under the Department of Defense.   In Truman’s Presidential Proclamation of Feb. 27, 1950, he said:  “Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality.

Today we are fighting a war on terrorism on multiple fronts, we have troops still posted in Korea, and Germany from wars of the past and the lessons of World War II are fading.  School children today have little understanding of this day and most do not even know the holiday exists.  How could we forget?

When a native son or daughter is lost in battle we lower the flags of our state for a few days.  We say kind words about sacrifice, and bravery then we slowly walk away.  Little regard is given to the daily duty performed by our military personnel both home and abroad.  Today is their day, how could we forget?

Today is a day for a little home schooling because our children may have missed the lesson at school.  Today we should not forget and our children should be taught to never forget the burden we place on those that volunteer to serve our nation with military service.

Our generation can not forget the lessons of the past; it is our responsibility to pass those lessons on to the next generation.  Today is Armed Forces Day, how could we forget?

The Opining Quill salutes the men and women of our military on this special day with this message:

All of America owes you a debt of gratitude.  May God be with you on your mission and may you return home safely to your families and your dreams.  You are not forgotten.

WE WILL NEVER FORGET

Sixty nine years ago today the 7th of December fell on a Sunday, a day originally set aside in colonial villages across New England as a day spent in reflection on the relationship between man and his creator.  This tradition continues as we gather on Sunday mornings in churches across this great nation.  Overseas the men and women serving our nation in uniform gather in some far off land, for a service, mass or quite moment of reflection with their God and so it was on December 7, 1941.

It was on a quite Sunday morning much like any other on the islands of Hawaii where some had gathered for church services. Suddenly and without warning the stillness in the air was broken by the horrific sounds of explosions and gunfire that marked the attack on Pearl Harbor 69 years ago today.

December 7th was a day that changed the course of history and the lives of millions of Americans their hopes and dreams were shattered that day.  Today we remember those brave men and woman servicing our nation at Pearl Harbor on that day, some were killed, some wounded and some lived to fight another day.

Many were young and died that day with dreams of lives not lived, some were fathers, some had children, some were bothers all were loved and all were killed without provocation.  That day was a Sunday, a day many had always set aside as a day of rest but now they are at eternal rest it came suddenly and without warning.

All will be remembered for their loyalty to country, and for their sacrifice in the name of America.  We remember them and honor them but most importantly we should pray for them on this day.

We can not repay them for their contributions to our lives but we shall never forget them.  As Americans we owe them and their families a debt of gratitude which we can never repay.  As parents we must teach our children the lessons of that day and our children should never forget the date December 7th 1941.  Please take a few moments today to say a prayer for the men and women sacrificed on that day and also remember their families.
