If your idea of an evening of summer fun is a night at the theater watching a top notch musical then you have the opportunity right in your own back yard. Head out to UConn this week and catch My Fair Lady before the run is over on the 17th.
Lerner and Lowe’s My Fair Lady has been performed for years and you may have seen it before but this is truly and outstanding performance. As one long-time season subscriber said, “this may very well be the best presentation by the Connecticut Repertory Theater in the last ten years”.
Starring the legendary Tony Award nominee, Terrence Mann as Henry Higgins and Eileen Fulton as Mrs. Higgins this is one show you don’t want to miss. You may remember Mann as Rum Tum Tugger in the memorable lead role of the original Broadway cast of Cats. Eileen Fulton spent fifty years on television as the first “bad girl” when she created the role of Lisa Miller on As The World Turns.
The comedy of Richard Ruiz as Alfred P. Doolittle is hilarious and worthy of a standing ovation. Mr. Ruiz is a graduate of UConn with a Masters in Fine Arts and this performance is a credit to his dedication to perfection in developing a character that will live in your memory.
My Fair Lady, can fall a bit flat if the casting of Eliza Doolittle is not up to the task and in this case Alix Paige was the ace-in-the-hole. Her understanding of the role and the importance of dialect development in concert with the diction and quality of voice in her musical numbers raises the bar for others to follow.
