Why We Fail To Correct Our Mistakes

u s capitol_building_jef_120622_wgWhy is it that the United States Congress is the object of scorn and low approval and yet incumbents enjoy such a high rate of re-election?  Could it be the answer is found within our own Declaration of Independence?

Much has been written about the power of the incumbency, the financial advantage wrought and wrung from the power of the office.  Money is tossed at the feet of elected officials by powerful and motivated special interests funding massive campaigns to preserve a position of privilege.

There is ample evidence and little doubt that the incumbent members of the U. S. House of Representatives and U. S. Senate have stacked the deck to their own advantage when it comes to re-election campaigns. Public service has morphed from a temporary devotion to public service into a financially rewarding career.

Our founding fathers three times rejected the idea of term limits while writing our Constitution, deciding more frequent elections would better maintain the will of the people.  Times have changed and the motivation for public service is not altruistic, today we most often see it as a life career choice.

So why do we allow the incumbents of an institution we are dissatisfied with to continue to represent us?  The answer is not simple; however, there are some things to consider.

Unlike our forefathers that lived in a society of self-reliance and personal responsibility today there is far greater dependency on government and an abdication of personal responsibility.  We see this change manifested in liability lawsuits and generations dependent on government financial support for everyday living.

These societal changes are also reflected in a reluctance of accepting responsibility for shortcomings that in the past would have been seen as personal responsibilities.  Hence, when Congress fails to perform well, the disappointment is rarely directed at the person for whom you voted, but rather for the other members of Congress.  In this way the abdication of self-responsibility aids the incumbents.

Change can be difficult, after all we know what we have in Congress and to some degree even mild disdain is easier to accept than the unknown of a potential replacement candidate.  Did our founding fathers recognize this human trait?

Apparently their understanding of this human frailty was apparent as they thought about the relationship with England and considered a change to sever the ties and move to independence.  It is within our Declaration of Independence we find these words, “Experience hath shewn, mankind are more disposed to suffer when evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed“.

The insight of our founders did not extend to modern day incumbents or the evils we seem to find sufferable.  One must consider just how dysfunctional Congress must become before we hold our own Congressman accountable for his contribution to our suffering.

Black Eyed Peas And Republican Choice

Today began with a brilliant sunrise, the harbinger of something new on the horizon.  The bright light of day was shining upon Connecticut and a radio blared out music of Black Eyed Peas.  The words have special meaning today:

I gotta feeling that tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night

The symbolism is too strong to ignore.  There is a new day and the dawning of a new era coming to Connecticut, the rise of the Republican Party.  The time is now for a new beginning, a new voice and new messenger to be heard.  Tonight the tinderbox of grassroots will be opened to a new spark of excitement and opportunity.  Yes, tonight’s gonna be a good night, tonight is going to be the first Republican debate featuring the candidates for the United States Senate.

The last Senatorial campaign in Connecticut featured a bonfire of money burned to a pile of ash and defeat for the Republican Party.  History is a great teacher; history can repeat itself or bring lessons of wisdom, opportunity and ultimately positive change.  Tonight’s going to be a defining moment in the future of the Connecticut Republican Party.

Tonight can be a glorious sunrise with the raising of a new voice or the day can end like any other as the Republican Party fades in the sunset and walks down the path of the past.  The debate will offer party faithful a choice of candidates offering a walk on the path of the past or climbing the mountain of opportunity with a hike to the summit.

Chris Shays and Linda McMahon are clearly the well-known path walkers of the past and have strong support in the land of steady habits.  The problem with steady habits is the self-destruction that can occur but that is the risk of alcohol and drugs.

There is one new Republican candidate for the U. S. Senate that supporters say can lead the Republican Party to the summit.  He is a conservative voice, a messenger with a massage for our small towns and urban cities.  He is the man they say can, like the Phoenix, bring the Republican Party from the ashes of defeat to victory at the polls.  He is Brian K. Hill.

Yes, tonight’s gonna be a good night and you can only watch the action live on the net at 7:00pm using this link:

The debate may be seen live at Kelly Middle School on Mahan Drive in Norwich

For Mr. Obama, A Time To Listen

Last night President Obama spoke to the nation.  We have two ears and one mouth and we should all remember there are times to speak and times to listen.  Mr. Obama choose to speak, his message was predictable and clear. He put the blame for the financial crisis on the Republicans.  That makes for good political posturing but hardly makes sense.

President Obama took office in 2008 and had dominating majorities in both the U. S. Senate and the House of Representatives.  The Democratic Party had the voting majority to pass budgets in any form, and to spend money as they saw fit.  They set the agenda, and they spent money, while making their number one priority a national health care plan that was ultimately passed without being completely written.

Then in 2010 the American people went to the ballot box and rejected the policies and politics that had been happening in Washington.  The President saw the House of Representatives change leadership it was a signal that the American people wanted change.  The many of the new members were elected on an agenda to reduce government spending, reduce the size and scope of government and to control taxes.

It was on that agenda and promise that the American people elected them and entrusted them with their vote.  Now the President wants them to break that promise, ignore the people that elected them and join with him to continue the path down which the American people clearly do not want to go.  A path of increased taxes, increased spending, larger government and higher debt was not the path they were elected to take.

The new members of Congress are standing firm and not selling out the people that voted them into office.  This is honest representation in Washington, this is representing the values and agenda upon which they were elected this is a refreshing new wave of political representation.

Mr. Obama blames the stalemate on Republicans and yet their majority is the result of the most recent voice of the American people.  When he concentrated on health care he shut out the Republicans and gave them no input into the legislation.  Now he wants them to take the blame for the Democratic inaction over the past two years that has led to this mess.  Now he wants to ignore the voice of the people spoken at the ballot box and wants the Republicans to compromise their values for his political gain.

Too often politics centers on personal gain and not on the will of the people.  Too often we have seen a compromise of values and political payoffs.  We saw it in the passage of health care legislation we do not need to see it again over the debt.

Under the policies of Mr. Obama the American taxpayers are burdened with a growing debt.  While Vice-President Biden will tell you the economy is humming he fails to mention the tune is Hi Ho Hi Ho Into Debt We Go!  The solution to our financial crisis is not found with more borrowed money it is found with better management of the money we have.  On that we should not be looking for compromise, we should be looking for commitment.

Elections Bring a Change in Washington but No Change in Mr. Blumenthal

Last November the voters of Connecticut gave Richard Blumenthal a vote of confidence and elected him to the United States Senate.  His campaign repeated the slogan “you know me” over and over and it was related to his frequent lawsuits as the Connecticut Attorney General.

One newspaper, the New Times broke a story early in his campaign about Mr. Blumenthal’s representing he served in Vietnam.  Now that is old news and Mr. Blumenthal said he misspoke about eight times and regretted it happened.  Ok, the voters gave him the benefit of the doubt.  Now it seems he has either misspoke again or has a chronic problem remember where he has been.

During a press conference in Washington, D.C., Mr. Blumenthal told the assembled crowd and members of the press, “Since the days of Roe v. Wade, when I clerked for Justice Blackmun, as a state legislator, as attorney general, I have fought this battle.”  That sounds good but there seems to be a problem.

Mr. Blumenthal did not clerk for Justice Blackmun during the days of Roe v. Wade.  History tells us the Roe v Wade decision was handed down in 1973 and Mr. Blumenthal clerked for Justice Blackmun in 1974.  Oops, I guess he misspoke or doesn’t really remember what he was doing in 1973.

Oh well he is Mr. Blumenthal and as he says, “you know me”.  Yes Dick, we know you and now we again have confirmation of what we can expect from you.  I think you call it misspeak, but it would be better if we just got truth and honesty.  We will accept you for the work you really do if it is worthwhile, you don’t need to embellish the facts, if what you do is a good job.  Rest assured Dick, it’s ok we can handle the truth.

WHO IS FIGHTING THE SECRET BALLOT AND WHY?

After a rally in New Haven on October 6th Democratic Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal said he supports union labor’s request for Congress to pass “card-check neutrality”.  If passed it would enable union organizers to get new union locals certified by gathering a set number of signatures and eliminate the secret ballot.

The history of labor unions is wrought with stories of strong arm tactics and intimidation.  If Mr. Blumenthal is successful in his bid to become the next Senator from Connecticut who will fight for the workers right to the secret ballot.  Mr. Blumenthal is willing to sell out a worker’s right to one of the fundamental tenets of democracy, the secret ballot.

Mr. Blumenthal likes to say he is fighting for you against special interest but in this case if you are not a union member he is fighting against you and your right to a secret ballot.  It is obvious Mr. Blumenthal has a special interest in mind on this issue.

In fact it is so obvious even the newly elected union president of the Federation of University Workers, representing Yale office workers Laurie Kennington said, “This is not just a politician.  He is one of us”.  Yes, Dick Blumenthal has even taken a side in a labor dispute by walking a picket line with Kennington’s workers.  Can we trust Dick Blumenthal to fairly represent all of us or will he revert to siding with his special interest supporters to maintain a political base of support?

Connecticut needs a Senator that is not controlled or beholding to any special interest group and that includes union labor.  When any politician does not see their job as representing all of the people equally we as a society have an obligation to oppose their quest for office.  Attacking business is a key campaign strategy of Richard Blumenthal and that is problematic.

Government produces nothing and depends on a strong economy with strong companies to provide jobs and economic opportunities.  Attacking businesses and industries is pure politics as negative and destructive as any other activity that emphasizes and fosters disrespect among cultures or people.

The current culture of attacking political opponents in a negative fashion for their business experience is wrong, just as it would be wrong to attack a person of experience limited to public service in government.  The candidates did not reach the levels they have and become candidates for high office by being incompetent, nasty and negative.

Mr. Blumenthal has served in office for a long time and should be able to identify a special interest group and he should have the ability to admit his allegiance to union labor.  It will be up to the voters to decide if they are willing to elect a person beholden to a special interest group such as Mr. Blumenthal or turn to a new face such as Linda McMahon who has funded her own campaign and holds no card of debt to any group.

Mr. Blumenthal Stumbles Again But Returns Money

Oh please say it is not so, the Connecticut Democratic candidate for the United States Senate Richard Blumenthal is returning inappropriate campaign contributions.  During the past week his campaign has returned checks received earlier this year from lawyers who have contracts with the Attorney General’s office.

Mr. Blumenthal has brushed off concerns about past indiscretions saying, “the people of Connecticut know me.”  That could be his greatest hurdle in his race to the Senate.

Mr. Blumenthal is correct the people of Connecticut have heard him say, “the people of Connecticut know me. They know that no donation from anyone will change the fact that I have fought for them and I will continue to fight for them.”

In various forms the people of Connecticut have heard Mr. Blumenthal say he will stand up to special interest groups and fight for them.  Unfortunately Mr. Blumenthal has failed to do that when it comes to the largest special interest in the State of Connecticut.  He has failed to protect the interest of taxpayers and the working men and women in Connecticut.  He did not fight against mandates for prevailing wage on municipal construction that continue to drive up the cost to taxpayers.  But wait there’s more.

Let’s hear Mr. Blumenthal speak on the issue of card check.  Either you oppose that or like Mr. Blumenthal you endorse the right to deny a worker a secret ballot in voting to join or reject a union.  Of course by Mr. Blumenthal’s ethics and standards I guess unions are not a special interest.  He must consider them a personal interest to be protected and supported at every turn in exchange for political support.

Yes, Mr. Blumenthal the people of Connecticut do know you, they know you as a self promoting, politician, more interested in self preservation of political office than standing up to special interests.  You misspoke on serving in Vietnam, you misspoke on standing up to special interests and now you are returning inappropriate campaign contributions.  Well that does sound like a career politician but I am not sure that is what the people of Connecticut want in their next United States Senator.

SOLVING AMERICA’S ECONOMIC DILEMMA COMES DOWN TO YOU

Connecticut faces the fall federal election season with great interest and new candidates.  Gone is Senator Dodd from the U. S. Senate and first term Congressman Joe Cortney will have to defend his voting record before the voters for the first time.  So what will impact the election as the number one issue?  The common answer is the economy but the underlying issue is confidence.

Across America and indeed here in Connecticut consumer confidence has been repeatedly reported as low.  Consumers that are not confident will hold back on spending particularly for larger items.  A lack of confidence is bad for the economy and generally not good news for an incumbent Congressman.  The chants and echoes of “its George Bushes fault” is getting old when you consider the Democrats have the unique position of not needing Republican votes to pass legislation.

One recent Reuters-Ipsos poll suggests that Congressman Cortney and other Democrats may find this to be a tough election.  “People still feel insecure about their future,” said Ipsos pollster Cliff Young. “They are spending less and saving more. They’re not buying a larger house or car or other luxuries because they’re worried — and that worry also manifests itself on the political side.”

Voters are justifiably concerned and lack confidence we are headed in the right direction.  The poll respondents were overwhelmingly negative concerning the priorities and the direction President Obama has led the congress.  Sixty seven percent of respondents are saying he has not focused on job creation compared to the attention given to healthcare and banking regulations.

The Connecticut Congressional delegation has virtually marched in step with the White House leadership, like sheep they have performed with a herd mentality.  It is little wonder that our economy is rattled by a lack of confidence with the perception that we flounder adrift with inexperienced leadership lacking a focus on the problem.

The voters were sold hope and change with slick marketing and social networking, now they have seen the change and lack confidence in the direction we are being taken by leadership.  The election will be impacted by Obama’s leadership, some will call the economy the number one issue but the real issue is confidence.

America has become a consuming nation.  Our economy is fueled by consumers flush with confidence and cash.  Economic downturns happen and eventually we have always worked our way out but with a lack of confidence the road will be rocky, slow and full of unforeseen hazards.  The best thing that can happen to the economy is to elect Senators and Representatives that provide consumers with confidence.

MIRROR REVEALS SHORTCOMING FOR SIMMONS SENATE RUN

In the world of politics image can make all the difference and the recent race for the Republican U. S. Senate nomination is a prime example. Two years ago it was considered a “safe seat” for Democrat Chris Dodd.

Times change and Dodd’s image was tarnished with the revelation of his mortgage loans, his role in the financial crisis and his support for “Obamacare”. Once considered unbeatable he fell by the weight of his own making and announced his retirement.

Former Republican Congressman Rob Simmons was an early announced candidate with a plan to challenge Dodd but all that changed as Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal soon replaced Dodd as the apparent front runner for the Democratic nomination.

Simmons faced not only Democratic opposition but perhaps his largest hurdle was Republican apathy and a general lack of enthusiasm for his candidacy outside of the 2nd Congressional District he once represented in Congress. The Republicans of the sprawling 2nd District widely supported Rob more out of loyalty for an old friend than out of political ideology from past performance. Rob lacked a track record of conservative votes and carried too much baggage of compromise from his terms in Congress. When he served as a Congressman Rob was diligent in his job but never “worked the district” for recognition, something that now has proven to be a shortfall.

The times have changed and today the winds of change do not favor a return of an old face to Congress. Republican activists reacted to Linda McMahon; they were captivated by her relentless schedule of appearances, coupled with a highly effective advertising campaign. Many will say McMahon bought the nomination but that is simply not true. Much of her advertising strategy was not directed at delegates to the Republican convention as much as it was to the general public. McMahon was smart in putting together a team that could build a campaign and win. Unlike Simmons she did not have the name recognition that should have come from years of service in the U. S. House of Representatives. She first had to show delegates she could be a viable candidate, and she backed that up with good old fashion hard work. She hit the ground running and making public appearances at a faster clip than has been seen in Connecticut politics for a very long time.

McMahon out worked Rob Simmons and proved to the majority of delegates that she could win. Delegates believed she could build a campaign that could win and she was able to catch the wind of change blowing toward Washington. Linda McMahon is a new face, not running as a career politician, not depending on special interest money. Linda McMahon is putting her own money up to bring change to Washington and has the wind at her back.

Mr. Blumenthal a career politician with history of parroting a party line will face tough headwinds in the storm known as the fall election. The winds of change favor Linda McMahon and if she can energize the general public like she did the delegates we will see some real change in Washington, a Connecticut Senator not funded by special interests.

But wait there’s more. McMahon still has a challenger in Peter Schiff with a campaign plan that is all about contact with the people of Connecticut and not about delegates. This is politics and the winds are constantly shifting. While the Opining Quill is not endorsing any candidate at this time, as a convenience the following information is provided: if you are a registered Republican in Coventry you can make arrangements to sign a petition for Peter Schiff to run in the Republican primary by calling (860) 742-3193.

This is a political year and the winds of change can swirl suddenly so if McMahon slips Simmons and Schiff are still in the wings ready to step forward in a primary.

SIMMONS VS McMAHON A BATTLE OVER FOOTWEAR FOR U. S. SENATE

After loosing the Republican Party endorsement last night Rob Simmons faces a conundrum this morning.  He is asking what footwear the voters will see me wear today

Rob had the early lead in all polls among candidates seeking the U. S. Senate endorsement from the Republican Party in Connecticut.  Rob made a calculated decision to announce he would not primary if he did not win the endorsement.  It was an obvious baiting move to trap opponents into the same corner.  However, opponents Peter Schiff and Linda McMahon never took the bait and now Rob is in the corner.

Linda McMahon won the Republican Party endorsement to run for the U. S. Senate after a spirited come from behind campaign to become the front runner against Democratic nominee Richard Blumenthal.  Now Rob Simmons must decide in what direction to step next and how it will be perceived.

Rob only has one pair of footwear but he knows he has two choices.  He can walk into a primary and opponents will say he is wearing “flip flops” or boldly march forward wearing what a Hawaiian calls “go aheads”.

Hawaiians coined the name “go aheads” because in that footwear you can not walk backwards.  The Simmons supporters today are telling Rob, go ahead.  The Mc Mahon supporters will point out Rob is wearing “flip flops”.

It will be up to the voters in a primary to decide if Rob looks best wearing “flip flops” or “go aheads”.  Either way Connecticut will see something that has become rare in this state, a primary battle for the Republican nomination to the U. S. Senate.

The endorsement of McMahon was no surprise to readers of Opining Quill see commentary of May 5th at link below.

HISTORY REVISED: WILL ATTORNEY GENERAL JUST FADE AWAY?

Over the weekend here at the Opining Quill the question was asked, is Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal hiding his records or revising his history?  Now we have a report out of the New York Times that perhaps he has been engaged in revising the history of his military record.

According to the Times Coventry’s, Jean Risley, the chairwoman of the Connecticut Vietnam Veterans Memorial Inc., recalled listening to an emotional Mr. Blumenthal offering remarks at the dedication of the memorial. She remembered him describing the indignities that he and other veterans faced when they returned from Vietnam.

“It was a sad moment,” she recalled. “He said, ‘When we came back, we were spat on; we couldn’t wear our uniforms.’ It looked like he was sad to me when he said it.”

Ms. Risley later telephoned the reporter to say she had checked into Mr. Blumenthal’s military background and learned that he had not, in fact, served in Vietnam.

The Times also quoted Mr. Blumenthal speaking at a gathering in Norwalk in March of 2008 when he said, “We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” The truth is Mr. Blumenthal never served in Vietnam.

While Mr. Blumenthal now attempts to dance around his deception newspapers across the state have long painted Mr. Blumenthal as a veteran of the Vietnam War.  This is not an issue of what service he performed it is an issue of reality, honesty and perception.

Will this impact Mr. Blumenthal in his campaign?  The odds are state Democrats will look the other way while they endorse him as their candidate for the U. S. Senate.  If Democrats nominate Blumenthal it should come as no surprise.  This is the same party that saw no problem with President Clinton committing perjury and maintaining his position.

No political party including Democratic or Republican should nominate and reward a professional politician pandering party position merely for party loyalty without regard to honesty, loyalty and commitment for and to the people from whom they seek election.  The nomination of Mr. Blumenthal should be viewed with skepticism.

Let is be said here, not all Democrats will support Mr. Blumenthal some will have the courage to stand up and speak in favor of honesty over politics.  Merrick Alpert another Democrat seeking the U. S. Senate nomination has already reacted.  According to the Hartford Courant in a reaction to the disclosure Mr. Alpert said, “As a citizen and as candidate, it’s shocking to see someone who has tried to craft this image of themselves as a fighter, as someone who is willing to always step up and tell the truth, to see him lie about serving in Vietnam.”

Mr. Alpert is shocked as any loyal American should be.  Cashing in on the image of Vietnam veterans for political gains is despicable.  Mr. Blumenthal would honor all of the Vietnam Veterans and serve the citizens of Connecticut if he immediately withdraws his name from consideration for nomination to the U. S. Senate by the Democratic Party.
